Decades ago, scientists have been trying to figure out the cause of periodontal disease. Dental studies have accepted that the major villains found to cause periodontal disease are the various types of bacteria in dental plaque. How a gum infection can have an impact on overall health is being learned more by researchers. Gum disease has been related to numerous health conditions in the recent years. For dental experts, this is a new and exciting area of research that remains to be controversial. Varying answers about the extent of the connection between gum disease and other medical problems have been produced by the emerging studies and there is more research to be conducted.

Permanent damage resulting from periodontitis often can often be repaired using corrective periodontal surgery. Also done a section of the month at a time using local anesthesia or general anesthesia, the damaged gum and bone is reshaped around the tooth in order to close off any remaining gaps or pockets that still remain and would otherwise trap disease causing plaque allowing for further disease progression. If you have periodontal disease, and you want to keep away from gum infection and save your teeth, it's going to require some treatment and some slight changes in lifestyle. Initially, you need to get a deep cleaning, called "scaling" or "root planning" that goes under your gum and removes all of the calculus and microbial debris from the tooth surface. This cleaning can take hours, and is usually spaced out over two to five appointments, and is done with anesthetic.

Several researches have been done about the effectiveness of this kind of remedy for hot flash symptoms. But if you already tried it and still it doesn't work, then you might want to try the other alternatives. Still, it is uncertain for researchers to determine the reason why black cohosh is such an effective remedy for hot flash. An estrogen-like substance appropriately named as phytoestrogens has been revealed during the assessments of the chemical compound of other plants and these phytoestrogens seem to affect the other chemicals in a woman's body.

Gum disease raises the risk of having a stroke and may lead to early death. It is also suspected that periodontal disease may cause respiratory disease, particularly lung infections such as pneumonia, or exacerbate existing respiratory conditions or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. That's because oral bacteria can be breathed into lungs, particularly in people with periodontal disease. The reason for this is that the oral cavity is the chief portal into the body. Oral care is a very important subject, since it can impact immensely on the overall health of an individual.

Plaque comes unnoticeable because it is a colorless film and sticky bacteria but tartar is a mineral build up which is fairly easy to see if they get stuck above the gumline.

Do you know what are the symptoms of swollen gums? When gums swell, pain may not be or may be present. When the swelling of the gums is due to infection, the beginning stage is usually characterized by the presence of bright red gums. If the infection left to progress, the gum color changes from red to bluish red to deep blue. Then the gums become tender, puffy, spongy and in rare cases, it may become thickened due to formation of scar tissue. Another common symptom in the advanced stage is the bleeding of the gums. And if swollen gums are not treated, there will be an exposure of the root of the teeth due to the downward movement of the gums, thus making a smile look unpleasant or unsightly.
